CAPS pooled pension fund update for October 2007

BNY Mellon Asset Servicing, the global leader in securities servicing, has today announced the CAPS pooled pension funds performance results in the UK for the month of October 2007.

Pooled performance

  • Balanced pooled funds achieved a median return of 3.1% in October 2007 (2.9% in September 2007).
  • Over one, three and five years to 31st October 2007, Balanced pooled funds returned 12.7%, 15.7% p.a. and 13.7% p.a. respectively.
  • Over 10 years to 31st October 2007 these funds have returned 7.3% p.a.
  • Active UK Equity managers returned 4.6%, net of fees, for the month. This was 0.3% ahead of the FTSE All-Share index of 4.3%.

Markets

  • There were some strong returns in the major equity markets during October 2007 and with the exception of Japanese Equities, all sectors achieved positive returns
  • Emerging Market Equities provided the highest equity and overall return during October, with 9.0%, whilst the lowest performing sector was Japanese Equities which returned -2.0%.
  • Both UK Bonds and Index Linked Gilts provided positive returns over the month, however, Overseas Bonds struggled in comparison, returning -0.5%.
  • Property (-1.3%) also struggled during October, and for the second consecutive month provided a negative return.

Balanced fund asset distributions

  • Despite managers moving money away from this sector, a strong relative performance boosted UK Equity weightings to 45.0%, an increase of 0.3% over the month.
  • Positive relative performance also boosted weightings in Emerging Markets to an all time high of 4.5%.
  • By contrast, weightings in both North American and Japanese Equities saw slight decreases during October, whilst holdings in Pacific ex Japan and European Equities remained static.
  • There were no changes to weightings in Bonds and Index Linked Gilts during October, however weightings in Cash fell by 0.2% over the same period.
  • Despite failing to achieve a positive return during October, weightings in Property saw a slight increase of 0.1% as managers moved money into this sector.
